Editorial: NBA 2k22 Introduces New Feature To Discover New Artists

The developers of 2k are introducing a new feature into their very popular basketball game franchise known as First Friday. In the words of Vice President of Global Marketing for 2k, Alfie Brody, "NBA 2k has become a global platform for music discovery and that continues with 2k22. This year, we are creating a dynamic soundtrack, complete with early access to unreleased tracks, new artists, and opportunities for fans to become part of the experience and solidify their place in video game history.” New songs will be added to the soundtrack every First Friday of the new season.

Their newest innovation will allow aspiring artists to be involved in this feature with 2k's own beat pack. It'll allow artists to record their verses over select beats to showcase their talents. More information on how this specific part of First Fridays along with the opportunity to be a part of the soon-to-be-growing soundtrack will be revealed closer to the game's release date on September 10th. Here is the official 2k beats site to check everything out so far. If this is any indicator towards ANYTHING, it probably confirms the rumors that the newest iteration of MyCareer mode will allow basketball players to become rappers. Imagine your player being the best Shaq archetype on the court and over some Alchemist production. Side note: read our first Beats, Bars, and Basketball installment pitting the starting five rapper hoopers versus the hooper rappers.

The base of the soundtrack so far will feature the likes of Nas, Megan Thee Stallion, Gunna, and Young Thug, Nxworries, Griselda, Thundercat, and many more now that this special feature has been revealed. 2k22 is transitioning from a playlist curation type of soundtrack in their past from artists like Jay-Z and DJ Khaled to making it more like passing the aux cord at a party or riding in the car. I'm awaiting battle rap bars discussing this feature in some clever bar scheme.

NBA 2k22 is rated E for Everyone from the ESRB and will be available on September 10 for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC platforms.
