Megan Thee Stallion Is A "Cobra"

On Friday, November 3, 2023, Megan Thee Stallion released a new single titled "Cobra" under her new independent label. Immediately after this song came out, social media was talking about the message behind the song and the authenticity of Megan's emotions. When listening to a rap song, it's easy to get lost behind the beat and not notice the deep lyrics that are being said. The video exhibits the artists inside of a venomous Cobra. Later on, she sheds pieces of her skin like the snack, which is a metaphor for her becoming more vulnerable and shedding her skin as she speaks about her mental health and her struggles in everyday life with anxiety.

The lyrics that struck me the most in this song were "At night, I'm sittin' in a dark room thinkin'/ Probably why I always end up drinkin'/ Yes, I'm very depressed/ How can somebody so blessed wanna slit they wrist?" I thought that her delivery of the message and the way she was so open to her listeners in this song was so beautiful. A lot of listeners thought that it was so unexpected and were a little uncomfortable with her open she was about her mental health, but that's what the rapper intended. This isn't the first time that the rapper has made a song speaking about mental health and the struggles of being a Black Woman, but it's the first song that has gotten attention all over social media. The topic of depression and anxiety is so important to speak about and her creating this song can also help people realize that they aren't alone in their battles. Not only that but it's important to know that music artists are people too; no matter how successful they are, no the amount of money you have, it can't assist you mentally. "Breakin' down and I had the whole world watchin'/ But the worst part is everyone watched me/ Every night I cried, I almost died/ And nobody close tried to stop it", communicates the idea of the artist feeling alone.

The reason that Megan named the song "Cobra" was because they "exemplify courage and self-reliance. They stand tall and fierce in the face of challenges, teaching one to tap into their inner strength and rely on oneself to conquer their threats", according to her infographic post. She then followed up that post with an infographic about cobras, which focused on "healing and renewal".

Between Megan Thee Stallion leaving her longtime label, the criminal case with Tory Lanez, and the other challenges she faced in the past year; this song is a great debut to a new chapter in her life.
