PRODUCER OF THE WEEK: Chemist

Our Producer Of The Week is Christopher Cobb, but he is more widely known by his producer name Chemist and his website chemistproductions, where he currently boasts over 44 million plays and over 4 million views! He has production credits for names such as Freeway, Peedy Crack, Steve Glover, Childish Gambino, Nipsey Hussle, Papoose, Meek Mill, The Lox, Tory Lanez, and more. We know the names, but we never know the producers behind the track. So who is Chemist?

Born in Richmond VA, Chemist went to Chesterfield Community high school, got his GED, then went straight into music production as a career path in 2006. He was mentored by Kajmir Royale from 2007 to 2009.

In 2010, he was given the opportunity to meet up with the Lengendary Dj L.E.S, which led for him ghost producing for Dj L.E.S for years. The two still work to this day on co-production for a number of projects. Chemist went to work with Tory Lanez with him on every project all the way up to Chixtape 2. In 2012 Chemist has also worked with Steve Glover and Childish Gambino producing in house for them!

Vy: What are some songs you've produced? What are your most notably accomplishments?

Chemist: I produced the paper boy track from the hit TV show Atlanta on Fx. I have unheard Nipsey Hussle tracks that I have no idea how I got them (he emailed me about rough drafts that he never released to my work). I worked w Nip when he was working on the marathon project.

I also produced the booties to the poll ad that was featured on Stephen Colbert! It was very controversial, but hey it got credit for the influence in the Georgia that got Biden in office.

Vy: Explain your journey as a producer.

I pursued a producer career online because artists in Richmond really didn't rock with me like that. I produced for a few Richmond natives like Metallic Keem, Lou E Millz, Trig, Cakes, and Versace Chachi, just to name a few!

Vy: Who influences your sound?

Chemist: My sound influences include J dilla, Kanye West, Drake, and CurrenSy.

Vy: What is your producing process like?

Chemist: I use Fl studio to make my beats, and I mainly start with a chord progression first to build my beats. (I play piano so it's easier that way) I use Hs80m speakers along with a key-station 87 key by m audio.

Vy: What's an interesting fact about you or your career?

Chemist: I actually turned down a deal w Tory Lanez In 2019. Honestly, I just didn't trust it.

What I enjoyed the most about getting to know Chemist is that he really stays true to himself! His success definitely came from doing his own thing. Keep your eyes on Chemist everyone! He's got projects in the work and a busy schedule up ahead!
