The DMV Based Band Got My Own Sound Delivers On "Moonshine Music"

Updated: Jun 29, 2021

The DMV-based Band Got My Own Sound released their much-anticipated jazz album Moonshine Music on March 31st. Got My Own Sound had a listening party over band member's Wes Watkins Instagram page. The band is composed of several members: Wes Watkins on the drums, Izzy Lemons and Keith Hammond on the guitar, Johnnie Steele on the keys, Rayneir Hodnett on the bass, and Elliot Jefferson on the keys and vocoder.

Moonshine Music definitely provides a variety of funk and jazz sounds all over the fifty-minute project. Some of my personal favorite tracks include Drew's Groove featuring Freewill, Cane, and BlaqueStone and Let's Start A Riot featuring King Los, Dave James, Paris Price, and Killa Cal. Let's Start A Riot focuses on demanding justice and aiming higher for equity in regards to dismantling white supremacy. Listening to this as a jazz fan whose Jazz ear ranges from Les McCann to Butcher Brown, this is definitely a refreshing sound. One can appreciate the wonderful bass and guitar work over the various vocal appearances from the likes of Cane and Killa Cal. You can stream the project on Apple Music below and follow the band on Instagram @gotmyownsound_
