PRODUCER OF THE WEEK: Travis Jasper

Our Producer of the Week is 25 year old producer and songwriter Travis Jasper from Manassas, Virginia! Travis has been making beats since he was just a teenager, and he now has eight years of experience under his belt. Some of his production credits include Snoop Dogg, Mila J, and Vedo.

I always look forward to supporting artists and musicians in the community, and Travis Jasper is someone that I have been so excited to interview! As a VCU student myself, I've been dying to get Travis Jasper on this blog segment to learn more about his musical journey post-grad. Keep reading to discover more about VCU alum Travis Jasper and his story behind how he started making beats!

Vy: How long have you been producing? How did that start out for you?

Travis Jasper: I’ve been producing since 2015. Growing up, music was always in my family. I started producing from watching my older brother, Tyler Jasper, who is a musician and producer as well. Both of us are now known as a music production duo called OSA (One Song Away).

Vy: Who are some of your production credits? Travis Jasper: I’ve produced for Mila J, Trap Manny, Jagged Edge, Kevin Gates, Vedo, Snoop Dogg, Choc, Fatboy SSE, & many more.

Vy: Briefly describe your sound.

Travis Jasper: My sound is some real "feel good" music -- music that evokes emotion.

"The music always has to make the listener feel something."

Vy: What inspires you to produce? Travis Jasper: What inspires me to produce? Just simply my love for music and always wanting to make something timeless that feels good to the listener.

Vy: Who are some of your musical influences/inspirations?

Travis Jasper: So many honestly. I grew up on all eras. Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Teddy Riley, Rodney Jerkins, Timbo, & Pharrell. In today's era, I'd have to say London on da Track, Cardiak, Hitmaka, Mustard, and so many more.

Vy: Who is your dream artist to produce for?

Travis Jasper: Personally this is the toughest question. I love music, and I want to produce for so many artists. I would have to say Travis Scott, SZA, Summer Walker, and Kendrick Lamar just to name a few.

Vy: What is your work process like when building a beat?

Travis Jasper: My work process is usually just producing in my house. I make most of beats in my own environment. I love having the opportunity to work with artists directly as well.

Vy: What is the hardest project that you've worked on, and how did you overcome it?

Travis Jasper: I won’t name the actual project, but as a creative working on a project that has major potential for your career, sometimes things just don’t go the way you planned. Your heart has to be in the art always, and just know that there is always more if you keep going.

Vy: What advice would you give to college students who are thinking of pursuing music?

"You only got one life. Always follow your dreams any chance you get. My company is called One Song Away, because we are all one song away from changing our lives." - Travis Jasper

Vy: lastly, name one fun fact about yourself! It can be anything.

Travis Jasper: A fun fact is that my three year old niece, Ava Jasper, shares some music production credits with my brother Tyler & I.

It was such an honor being able to interview Travis Jasper and gain insight into how he operates as a beat maker. I appreciate how his production credits boast a wide range of versatility between artists and sounds. At the end of the day, you're definitely gonna feel good when you hear one of Travis's songs. It was hard for me to stay still while listening -- it just makes you feel some type of way! Be sure to check out Travis Jasper and stay tuned for our next Producer of the Week!
